Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
