Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question certain decisions from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
